Starting a cut flower patch

The temptation with a first cutting patch is to grow one of everything. You end up with a great deal of foliage and not quite enough of anything to make a bunch.

Think in fours

A vase wants a focal flower, a spire, a filler and something textural. Grow four or five varieties in each of those roles rather than twenty singletons.

Sow in succession

Three sowings three weeks apart will keep you cutting from June to the first frost.
