Germination
Sow indoors at any time, best results Mar-May and Aug-Sep. Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Place tray in a polythene bag and put in the fridge, 4°C, for 4 weeks. Remove to warmth, ideal temp. 20°C. Light is needed for germination. Germination takes 30-60 days. Even under ideal conditions germination can be erratic. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots and grow on in the greenhouse for their first winter. Acclimatise and plant out the following spring when danger of frost has passed.
Growing
Prefers a well-drained acidic soil in full sun. Can tolerate coastal planting.
Cultivation
Trim each spring to maintain a compact attractive shape. The flowering stems can be harvested in autumn and dried. Propagate via cuttings of mature wood of this seasons growth in late autumn or by division in spring.
