Germination

Sow indoors. Surface sow onto moist well-drained seed compost. Cover seed with a fine layer of vermiculite or compost. Propagate. Ideal temp. 21°C. Germination takes up to 14-21 days. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots and grow on in cooler conditions. Acclimatise and plant out once danger of frost has passed with 30cm spacing. For further growing information please refer to our web-site.

Growing

Self blanching varieties do not require trenching. Dress planting area with plenty of well rotted manure or compost dug in several weeks before planting. Just prior to planting rake in a general purpose fertiliser. Plant in a square or block formation with 20-30cm spacing, this ensures the crowded plants will shade each other. Water well in warm weather and liquid feed throughout the summer. Plants on the outside of the block are more exposed. These plants can have straw tucked around them to aid the self-blanching process.

Cultivation

Harvest when the stalks reach 30cm approx. by lifting the plants with a garden fork. Harvest from the outside of the block and work towards the centre to minimise plant damage.
