Germination
Sow directly where they are to flower. Sow seed thinly 12mm deep in drills 45cm apart. Soil should be finely prepared and raked to a fine tilth. Germination takes approx. 21 days. When large enough to handle thin to 45cm spacing. Can be started early indoors, sow into individual 8cm pots and keep at 20-25°C. Acclimatise and plant out once danger of frost has passed.
Growing
Easy to grow. Ideally placed near a fence or wall. Water deeply but infrequently. Feed sparingly. Will require staking or a support, chestnut stakes are ideal hammered 30cm into the ground.
Cultivation
If you wish to harvest the seed protect the flower head with garden fleece to deter squirrels and birds, or cut the head and dry indoors. Seeds ready approx. 30-45 days after bloom.
