Germination
Sow indoors at any time. Prior to sowing soak seed for 1-2 hours in hot, not boiling, water. Sow 1-2mm deep into moist, well-drained seed compost. Ideal temp. 21°C. Germination takes 30-90 days approx. Even under ideal conditions germination can be erratic. Can be grown under glass in spring. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to individual pots and grow on. If planting out do so when well grown and after danger of frost has passed.
Growing
Prefers a fertile, humus-rich, sandy, well-drained soil in full sun. Requires a frost-free climate. Water well when in growth. Prefers a sheltered situation away from cold winds. Possibly best container grown in the UK where it can be brought inside during cold weather. Can be perennial in tropical regions, best grown as an annual in the UK.
Cultivation
Usually grown as an annual in the UK, if so requires little attention. Beautiful flowers are followed by very attractive seed pods. Will be cut down by first frosts.
