Germination
Sow indoors. Surface sow onto moist well-drained soil-less compost. Cover with a fine layer of grit or sieved soil. Water from the bottom. Keep in a light place, greenhouse or cold frame, ideal temp. 15°C. Never allow the surface of the soil to dry out. Germination takes 2 weeks-several months. If germination has not occurred after 8 weeks cold stratify. Move to 4°C. for 6-8 weeks then return to warmth. Repeat process until germination occurs. Once germinated damping off can be a problem. Prick out seedlings when they have 2-3 true leaves. Pot on as needed. Acclimatise and plant out in summer or autumn or the following spring depending on size and climate.
Growing
Thrives in areas with cool damp summers. Prefers moist well-drained soil enriched with leaf mould in a partially shaded site with wind protection. Never allow the soil to dry out. May benefit from fish, blood and bone fertilising. Plant 10 plants together for maximum impact.
Cultivation
Cut down to the base in late autumn. Mulch in spring with a well composted leaf mould and add a slow release fertiliser.
