Sow
Germination
Sow from late winter to summer. Direct sow into any firm well-drained soil. Sow thinly 15mm deep into rows spaced 15cm apart. Avoid planting into recently manured soil. If the ground is very wet plant into raised beds. Germination rakes 21 days approx. When large enough to handle thin to 10cm spacing. Replant thinnings elsewhere. Successional sow every 3 weeks for continuous supply. Early and late sowings may require cloche protection.
Growing
Once planted out cover with netting or fleece to prevent attack from birds and insects. Water freely during dry weather. If desired you may feed the plants using a high nitrogen feed as soon as the bulbs start to swell and again 5 weeks later.
Cultivation
Can be harvested young as a spring or bunching onion or allowed to grow on to the continental size.
