Germination
Sow immediately into a cold frame. Allow autumn warmth followed by winter cold to offer ideal conditions for germination. The seed forms a primary root approx. 7 months after sowing. The first leaves should appear 12 months approx. after sowing. Allow seedlings to grow on undisturbed for 2 years, feeding occasionally. After the 2 years transplant individually and grow on for another year in a shady spot in the greenhouse. Acclimatise and plant out the following spring. Can be sown indoors at any time with 3 weeks warmth, 20°C. followed by 8 weeks cold stratification, 4°C. and then return to warmth for germination.
Growing
Prefers a humus-rich or light, sandy, neutral or slightly acidic soil. A woodland is ideal. Prefers dappled shade. Prefers consistently moist soils. The plant emits an unpleasant odour so site carefully.
