Germination

Sow indoors or under glass in spring. Prior to sowing soak seed for 24 hours in warm water. If the seeds swell sow immediately, if not prick seed coating with a pin and soak again. Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Do not cover seed simply press into the soil. Ideal temp. 20-24°C. Germination takes 30-40 days approx. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to individual pots and grow on under glass. Only move outside in warm conditions.

Growing

In the UK best grown in a cool greenhouse or conservatory, a min. temp. 15°C is ideal. Prefers a loam-based compost or a fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Can be tried outside in a warm, sheltered spot in full sun or simply move the container from the greenhouse to outside in warm weather. If outside frost-free protection will be required. When in growth water frequently and offer a balanced fertiliser. In winter reduce watering.

Cultivation

Pruning group 1. No routine pruning necessary. Prune if needed in spring-summer. After pruning mulch and feed. Propagate by seed or via semi-hardwood cuttings in summer. Harvest fruit using secateurs when the crown at the base of the fruit has become curled and brown.
