Germination
Sow indoors at any time or in a cold frame in autumn. Germination is erratic and can take up to 18 months. Indoors, sow 4mm deep into moist well-drained seed compost. Ideal temp. 16-18°C for 3 months then cold stratify. Move to 4°C for 3 months then return to warmth for germination. For cold frame sowing, sow in autumn, natural winter cold should offer ideal conditions for germination the following spring as the weather warms. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots and grow on for at least their first winter under glass. Acclimatise and plant out once danger of frost has passed.
Growing
Prefers a fertile, well-drained acid soil. Avoid waterlogged soils. Full sun is needed to bring out the colours of the foliage.
Cultivation
Pruning group 11. If training on a wall or trellis tie in new growth, prune back overlong shoots, remove dead shoots. No regular pruning is required.
