Germination

Direct sow in spring on any firm well-drained soil. Sow thinly 10mm deep in rows 30cm apart. Avoid planting into recently manured soil. On wet ground try growing in raised beds. When large enough to handle thin to 10cm apart for medium bulbs more if you want larger bulbs. Can start early indoors. Sow into module trays, 10mm deep into seed compost. Propagate at 10-15°C until after germination occurs which takes 10-14 days. Once germinated grow on in cooler conditions. Acclimatise and plant out after danger of frost has passed with 10cm spacing.

Growing

Once planted out cover with netting or fleece to prevent attack from birds and insects. Water thoroughly until established then water only if the soil is dry. Weed between rows.

Cultivation

Harvest 1-2 weeks after the leaves begin to turn yellow. Harvest on a dry day. Loosen from the soil with a fork and leave on the soil surface for 1-2 days until they have dried in the sun. Once dry remove top foliage.
