Germination
Sow indoors at any time. Germination is renowned for being slow and irregular and can take +1 year. Prior to sowing soak the seeds in hot water for 24-48 hours. You may also scratch through the hard seed case with a file prior to soaking if desired. Sow 4-6 mm deep into a compost with 1/3 added sand. Ideal temp. 21-27°C. Watch out for damping off, keep well ventilated. Transplant seedlings when they are 5cm tall to individual pots and grow on.
Growing
Can not tolerate even mild frost. Minimum temp. 12°C. Grow in a greenhouse or conservatory. Prefers a well-drained sandy soil in full, hot sun. Water well when the compost is dry. Continue to water even if the leaves are lost over winter.
Cultivation
Pot on as required every 2 years. Trim roots by a third. Ideally use a terracotta pot with a hole. Fill with a mix of compost 7:3 sand. Water well.
