Germination
Our Sequoia seeds are chilled prior to dispatch. There is no need to cold stratify but do plant the seeds as soon as they arrive. Fill small pots with compost mixed with 10% vermiculite and 10% sand, alternatively a bonsai soil may be used. Sow 10mm deep. Keep the compost quite damp. Ideal temp. 21°C. Germination should take 1-3 months. Beware of damping off. Once germination occurs do not keep the soil so moist. If germination does not occur cold stratify. Move to 4°C. for 2-4 weeks then return to warmth. Germination can be erratic and of low %, this is normal. Once seedlings are large enough to handle move to clay pots filled with 8:1:1 soil, gravel, sand mixture, or again a bonsai soil. Fill bottom of pot with gravel then add potting mixture. Remove seedling very carefully from original pot and plant into clay pot. Keep soil moist but not wet. Expose seedling gradually to sun over the course of a month. Water weekly . Good air circulation is required to prevent root rot.
Growing
Prefers moderately fertile, moist well-drained soil in full sun to dappled shade. Keep seedlings under glass for the first winter. Do not over water seedlings. By 18 months the trees may be placed outside in all weathers. Pot on as needed. Plant into the ground when too large to pot. Choose the site carefully.
