Germination
Sow outdoors ideally in autumn-early spring. Surface sow onto moist well-drained seed compost. Cover with 5mm of compost or grit. Keep the seed pot/ tray in a cool, well lit spot. Artificial heat is not needed and may prevent germination. The seeds will germinate in the warm spring weather following a natural period of cold. Be patient. Germination can be slow and erratic. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to open ground or to a larger pot. May flower in the first year.
Growing
Prefers a warm sheltered position in a gravelly well-drained soil.
Cultivation
In colder areas the bulbs may struggle to survive the winter cold. Bulbs can be lifted and stored in a frost free area for replanting the following spring. Container grown plants can be simply brought inside to overwinter.
