Germination
Sow indoors as soon as possible. Prior to sowing soak seeds for 24 hours in warm water and chip or scarify seed coating. Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Just cover seed with a sprinkling of soil. Propagate. Ideal temp. 20-25°C. Germination takes 21-30 days. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots and grow on indoors.
Growing
Suited to being grown as a houseplant in the UK. Requires a minimum temperature of 13°C in winter. Avoid cold, draughty areas. Prefers bright, filtered light. Direct sunlight may scorch the leaves. Prefers a humid situation. Do not place directly above a radiator. Insufficient light may cause the leaves to yellow and drop. Water regularly, keeping the soil moist but not wet. Waterlogged soils may cause root rot. Reduce watering over winter. A weak, liquid feed may be offered if desired.
Cultivation
Perhaps ideally placed in a bathroom for the increased humidity. Humidity can be increased by misting the plant or by placing the pot in a pot tray which is filled with pebbles which remain consistently moist. Repot every few years. Handle foliage with care as the plant has thorny spurs. Trim foliage if desired. Propagate by seed.
