Germination

Sow directly in autumn. Sow under glass in spring. Sowing directly will allow natural winter cold to offer the ideal conditions for germination to occur in spring as the weather warms. Under glass sow at 20°C for 3-4 weeks then cold stratify. Move to -4°C-+4°C for 2-4 weeks then return to warmth for germination. Germination takes 3-4 weeks but can be slow and difficult taking up to 2 years. Do not discard the pot prematurely. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle and grow on. Acclimatise and plant out in spring.

Growing

Prefers any, even poor, moist but well-drained soil in full or partial sun. Ideal for woodland gardens, rock gardens or the border. Hardy to -25°C.

Cultivation

Propagate by division in spring.
