Germination
Sow indoors late winter-spring, sow directly Apr-May. Indoors, surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Just cover seed with a sprinkling of soil. Light is needed for germination. Propagate. Ideal temp. 18-21°C. Germination takes 10-18 days approx. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots and grow on in cooler conditions. Pinch out growing tip to encourage bushy growth. Acclimatise and plant out when danger of frost has passed. Directly, sow 6mm deep in drills of finely prepared soil, 30cm apart. Thin to required spacing. Successional sow for continual display.
Growing
Prefers any well-drained soil in full sun. Will tolerate poor or sandy soils. Can tolerate partial shade. Water well in summer.
Cultivation
Deadhead spent flowers to extend the flowering window. Annual plant, pull and compost at the end of the season.
