Germination
Sow indoors in spring. Prior to sowing chip or scarify seed(rub seed coating with fine sandpaper) and soak in warm water for 24-48 hours. Sow 6mm deep into moist, well-drained seed compost. Propagate. Ideal temp. 20-25°C. Slow to germinate, 21-60 days approx. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots and grow on. Acclimatise and plant out when danger of frost has passed.
Growing
Prefers any well-drained soil in full sun. Needs a sheltered, warm site. In autumn rhizomes can be lifted and stored in a frost-free place or in mild gardens leave in the ground but cover with a protective mulch. Requires plenty of water in the growing season.
Cultivation
Propagate by division. Allow to die back after the growing season. Then either lift the rhizome and dry store or offer a protective winter mulch. Replant the following spring after danger of frost has passed.
