Germination

Seeds require a period of warmth followed by cold and damp to germinate. Best to sow under glass in summer/ autumn, a cold frame is ideal. Under glass, surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Just cover seed with a sprinkling of soil, ideal temp. 6 weeks at 22°C followed by 6-8 weeks of cold, below 4°C. Germination should occur as the weather warms in spring. Sometimes a second period of cold is needed for germination to occur. Seeds can be sown indoor at any time. Indoors, place seeds between damp kitchen paper, seal in a freezer bag or similar and place somewhere warm, then pop in the fridge, timings as above. Remove to warmth for germination. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots and grow on allowing a tuber to form.

Growing

Prefers a moderately fertile, humus-rich soil in partial sun.

Cultivation

Requires little attention.
