Germination
Sow as soon as possible, at any time of year. Prior to sowing soak seeds for 48 hours in warm water. Drain. Sow seed into a 6cm pot which is filled with damp perlite. Place the pot inside a zip lock-type freezer back which has a little water in the bottom so the pot is sitting in the water. A liquid fertiliser could also be added to the water if desired. Seal the pot inside the bag and place somewhere warm. Ideal temp 25°C. during the day, dropping to 18°C at night. Germination takes 45-60 days approx. Do not discard prematurely. Once germinated admit air and grow on indoors.
Growing
Best grown as a house plant in the UK with a minimum temperature of 15°C. This is an evergreen Palm which can grow to 4 metres in its native environment, when grown as a house plant it will be significantly smaller. Prefers a loam-based potting compost in bright, but indirect sunlight. Water freely when in growth, reduce watering in winter months. A liquid fertiliser may be used during the growing season if desired. This is a tropical plant and will appreciate increased humidity, this can be provided by placing the plant pot onto a tray filled with pebbles and water or via misting of the plant.
