Germination

Sow into an open cold frame in autumn. Sow seed thinly onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Just cover seed with a sprinkling of soil and add 10mm of fine grit. Place in an open frame or a sheltered spot in the garden. Allow natural winter cold to offer ideal conditions for germination to occur in late winter as the weather warms. Allow to grow on in the pot. Do not allow to dry out, even when leaves die back. Repot or liquid feed as desired. Plant out after 4 years approx.

Growing

Prefers a humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil that does not dry out in summer. A woodland setting is ideal. Will take 4-6 years to flower from seed.

Cultivation

Propagate by seed or by division after the foliage has dies back. No pruning required.
