Germination

Sow indoors immediately. Surface sow onto moist well-drained seed compost with a little added sand, press the seeds gently into the soil until only the feather-head of the seed is showing(one end of the seed is quite solid the feather end will divide when pressed gently with a finger nail). Propagate or place on a sunny windowsill. Ideal temp. 20-25°C. Germination takes 2-3 weeks approx. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots and grow on. When you have 4 true leaves move to final planting position in the greenhouse with 30cm spacing. Water carefully until established.

Growing

Prefers cool, well-ventilated conditions with good light. A frost free greenhouse or a sunny windowsill is ideal. When the plants are in growth water freely and liquid feed. Offer shade protection from hot sun. Whitefly can be a problem, treat accordingly. In winter keep the compost a little dry.

Cultivation

Flowers can be produced within 4-6 months of sowing but will only flower lightly in the first season. These flowers can be removed to help promote a vigorous crown. Deadhead or cut flowers in subsequent seasons to prolong the flowering. Established plants can be divided in March or April. Divide the rootstock and crown into 4-5 pieces each with one growth bud, propagate until well rooted.
