Germination
Sow indoors at any time. Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Ideal temp. 18-27°C. Light is needed for germination. Germination takes 10-60 days approx. If germination does not occur cold stratify. Move to 5°C for 4-6 weeks then return to warmth for germination. Even under ideal conditions germination can be erratic. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots and grow on. Acclimatise and plant out after danger of frost has passed.
Growing
Prefers a fertile, moist but well-drained, neutral soil in full or partial sun. The woody rootstock tends to lift out of the ground with growth, mulch annually or lift the whole plant and replant.
Cultivation
Deadhead or remove faded flower spikes. If foliage is damaged by frost shear off before new growth emerges in spring. Propagate by division in autumn or spring.
