Germination

Sow indoors at any time, sow into a cold frame in autumn or spring. Indoors, sow 5mm deep into moist, well-drained seed compost. Ideal temp. 18-22°C for 2-4 weeks then cold stratify. Move to -4°C-+4°C for 4-6 weeks then return to warmth for germination, 5-12°C. Outside simply plant into a cold frame, natural winter cold will offer ideal conditions for germination to occur as the weather warms in spring. Once seedlings emerge grow on in individual pots for at least a year before planting out.

Growing

Prefers any well-drained soil in full sun. Do not fertilise as this will encourage leaf growth at the expense of flowers.

Cultivation

Spreads via rhizomes. Established clumps can be divided in spring. Cut back hard in late summer after flowering.
