Germination
Sow under glass Mar-May. Surface sow onto moist but well-drained seed compost. Do not cover the seeds but simply press into the soil. Propagate or place in a polythene bag to maintain humidity. Ideal temp. 21-25°C. Germination takes 1-3 weeks. Once germinated admit air. Grow on. Leaves can be harvested from 4 weeks. Can be sown directly, only after danger of frost has passed, with a 25cm spacing.
Growing
Prefers a sunny, dry location in the garden or can be grown indoors. This is a tender perennial plant and prefers not to be exposed to frost, although it can survive -5°C to -10°C. This plant can also be grown as an ornamental plant.
Cultivation
The leaves can be harvested as a micro leaf or baby leaf. If you harvest the shoot tips the rest of the plant will continue to grow. The leaves can be eaten raw in salads or used as a garnish. Leaves can also be steamed if desired.
