Germination

Seed has a naturally low germination, expect 50% germination. Sow indoors at any time. Seeds are tiny, open packet carefully. Seeds may be mixed with silver sand to aid sowing. Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost which can be mixed 2:1 with perlite to create a light, open soil. Just cover seed with a sprinkling of soil as light is needed for germination. Ensure the soil remains moist but not wet at all times. You may propagate or place pot in a plastic bag to maintain humidity, leave the bag part open to allow air in. Water with only 1-2 drops of water per day. Ideal temp. 9-13°C, but quite happy at 20°C. Germination takes 6 weeks but can be erratic. If germination does not occur cold stratify, moved to 4°C for 2-4 weeks then return to warmth for germination. Once germinated allow to grow on in the pot until a root system has formed.

Growing

Prefers a fertile, moist but well-drained, neutral to slightly acid soil in bright, filtered light. Water in the morning, keep moist but not wet. This plant prefers 40-50% humidity. A slow-release fertiliser may be offered if desired. Can be container grown. Likely to be damaged by cold winter weather.

Cultivation

Propagate by seed. Allow seedheads to dry on the plant, remove and then collect seeds. Sow fresh seed as soon as possible. May be propagated from hardwood heel cuttings.
