Germination

Seed requires a period of cold to germinate. Sow directly or into a cold frame in autumn or sow indoors Jan-Mar. Indoors sow seed 10mm deep into moist, well-drained seed compost, place somewhere warm for 2-4 weeks at 15-20°C then cold stratify, a fridge is ideal temp. 0-4°C for 4-6 weeks, remove to 5-12°C for germination. Germination takes a few weeks but can be erratic. Grow on seedlings. Only plant out after danger of frost has passed. If sowing into a cold frame simply surface sow onto compost, just cover with a sprinkling of soil and allow natural winter cold to offer ideal conditions for germination to occur as the weather warms in spring.

Growing

Prefers any moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full or partial sun.

Cultivation

Remove dead foliage and spent flower stems in spring. Propagate by seed or by division in autumn.
