Germination

Sow under glass in spring or autumn. Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Just cover seed with a sprinkling of soil. Place in a propagator to maintain humidity and moisture. Ideal temp. 17-20°C. Germination takes 2-6 weeks approx. transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots and grow on. Acclimatise and plant out in May-June.

Growing

Prefers any, even nutritionally poor, sharply/well-drained soil in full or sun. Plants dislike root disturbance so move to final position as soon as possible. Offer protection from winter wet. Can be prone to rot in shaded areas, excellent drainage is essential.

Cultivation

Seedheads can be left on the plant for winter interest or cut and used in dried flower arrangements. Will self-seed freely, young seedlings look like Thistles. Propagate by seed or root cuttings taken in winter.
