Germination
Sow into a cold frame in autumn. Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Do not cover seed, light is needed for germination. Cover seed with a sheet of glass or clear plastic. Place in a cold frame. Natural winter cold should offer ideal conditions for germination to occur as the weather warms in spring. Move into a greenhouse or a warm spot to encourage germination. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots and grow on. Acclimatise and plant out after danger of frost has passed with 30 cm spacing.
Growing
Prefers a slightly alkaline, well-drained loamy soil in full or partial sun.
Cultivation
Will self-seed freely. Deadhead if you do not want volunteer seedlings next season. Once established propagate by division in spring. Harvest leaves before first frosts and if not used fresh hang to dry for future use.
