Germination

Sow indoors Feb-Apr. or in autumn. Sow directly from March. Indoors, surface sow onto moist well-drained seed compost. Just cover with vermiculite or a sprinkling of soil. Ideal temp. 15-20°C. Germination from 2 weeks but can be variable. After germination reduce temp. to 15°C. Transplant clumps of seedlings to a 1L pot and grow on. Plant out in summer. Direct, sow 30mm deep into well prepared soil in rows 75cm apart. Germination takes 7-21 days. Thin to 30cm spacing.

Growing

Prefers a light moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil. May require winter protection in colder areas. Fertilise once in summer for an improved show but do not over-fertilise as this will increase leaf growth at the expense of flower quality.

Cultivation

Remove dead foliage and old flowered stems in spring as new growth appears in the centre of plants.
