Germination

Sow indoors in spring. Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Do not cover seeds but press lightly into the soil. Cover seed tray with glass or clear plastic or propagate. Ideal temp. 21°C. Germination takes 15-30 days and can be erratic. Once germinated admit air to prevent damping off. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to individual pots. Pot on as the plant grows. Prefers a compost with added sand for drainage. Treat as a house plant.

Growing

Grow under glass, a bright windowsill is ideal. Avoid strong sunlight. Keep away from draughts. Water once a week when buds appear, a liquid fertiliser can be added to this if desired. Increase watering to 2-3 times per week in summer. Water the soil, not the foliage. The plant likes humidity, stand the pot on pebbles to increase humidity. Ideal temp. 15-24⁰C.

Cultivation

Propagate by cuttings in early summer or by division of tubers. Remove dead leaves or flowers only. Repot as required.
