Germination
Sow indoors at any time. Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Just cover seed with a sprinkling of soil. Place in a propagator or seal in a polythene bag to maintain humidity. Ideal temp. 25-27°C. Germination takes 1-2 weeks approx. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to individual pots and grow on under glass. Plant out only in warm weather.
Growing
A tender perennial which can be grown as an annual if preferred. Prefers a rich, well-drained sandy, loam-based soil or container plant with compost. Prefers full or partial sun and a high level of humidity. Possibly best grown under glass in the UK. Plants can become leggy and will benefit from being cut back to encourage bushier growth. Very attractive to slugs, treat accordingly.
Cultivation
Leaves can be picked as required. Leaves may be eaten straight from the plant or used to make a tea. Plants can also be pulled and dried, dried leaves should be stored in an airtight jar. Dried leaves can be blended to create a powder which can be used in baking as a sugar replacement.
