Germination
Sow indoors 6-8 weeks before last expected frost. Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost, do not cover seed, simply press into the soil. Ideal temp. 18-22°C. Germination takes 1-2 weeks approx. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots and grow on under glass. Acclimatise and plant out after danger of frost has passed. Can be sown directly after danger of frost has passed into prepared soil. Thin seedlings as required.
Growing
A tender perennial which can be grown as an annual. Prefers a sandy soil in full, hot sun. Will tolerate any soil, moist or well-drained and partial sun. Very easy to grow. Water well until established.
Cultivation
Will self-seed freely once established. Deadhead if you do not want volunteer seedlings next season. Best treated as an annual in the UK, but this plant has large tubers which can be lifted and stored in a frost -free area if desired where they can be re-planted as the weather warms.
