Germination
Sow indoors Feb-Jun. Surface sow onto moist well-drained seed compost, just cover seeds with a sprinkling of soil. Ideal temp. 18-21°C. Germination takes 5-21 days. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots. Acclimatise and plant out after danger of frost has passed with 25cm spacing. Can be sown directly from April into well prepared soil that has been raked to a fine tilth.
Growing
Pinch out growing tips and first set of leaves in May to create a bushier plant.
Cultivation
Deadhead or cut flowers to extend flowering window. Cut plant to ground level after first frosts. Divide every 3-4 years to maintain plant vigour. Divide as soon a growth begins in spring. This is a short-lived perennial but will remain in the garden through self-seeding.
