Germination
Sow under glass winter-spring, sow direct in spring or late summer. Indoors surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Just cover seed with a sprinkling of soil, propagate or cover with a sheet of glass until germination occurs. Remove glass after germination and grow on. Directly, sow into a well prepared seedbed 5mm deep, 30cm apart. Transplant approx. 5 weeks later when seedlings have 4-5 leaves. Handle carefully as not to disturb the roots. Plant 50cm apart. Prefers rich firm soil with plenty of well rotted manure dug in. Successional sow for continuous supply.
Growing
Once transplanted keep well watered. Cover with netting or fleece to prevent bird or insect attacks. Requires little attention.
Cultivation
Pinch out centre stem to encourage side shoots to develop. Can be harvested as young leaves as cut and come again. Can be left in the ground throughout winter until required. Flavour improves after it has been frosted.
