Germination
Sow indoors Mar-Apr. Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Just cover seed with a sprinkling of soil. Ideal temp. 18-22°C. Germination takes 1-3 months but can be longer. After germination move seedlings to a greenhouse or cold frame. Grow the seedlings on in their pot for the first year. Transplant seedlings into individual pots in their second year. Plants are likely to flower in their third year. Acclimatise and plant out, if desired, when danger of frost has passed.
Growing
Prefers a fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Can be container grown. In cold areas mulch well over winter. Expect to flower in 2-3 years from sowing.
Cultivation
Propagate by division every 3-4 years in spring. No need to cut down in autumn as the seedheads look attractive over winter.
