Germination
Sow indoors Mar-Apr. Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Just cover seed with a sprinkling of soil. Place in a propagator or seal in a polythene bag to maintain humidity. Ideal temp. 16-18°C. Germination takes 1-3 months but can be longer. After germination move seedlings to a greenhouse or cold frame. Grow on. Acclimatise and plant out, if desired, when danger of frost has passed.
Growing
Prefers a fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Can be container grown. In cold areas mulch well over winter. Expect to flower in 2-3 years from sowing.
Cultivation
Propagate by division every 3-4 years in spring. No need to cut down in autumn as the seedheads look attractive over winter.
