Germination
Sow in a cold frame immediately, but ideally Oct-Mar. Surface sow onto moist well-drained seed compost in a 10cm pot. Just cover with soil. Light is needed for germination. Ideal temp. 12-18°C. The seeds require a period of cold, 5°C. For germination to occur, a cold frame will offer natural winter cold and should allow the seeds to germinate as the weather warms in spring. Germination takes 30-180 days and can be erratic. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to 8cm pots and grow on. Acclimatise and plant out once danger of frost has passed.
Growing
Prefers a moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil in a cool position. A shaded woodland position is ideal. In colder regions may need winter protection. Tuber must not be allowed to dry out when dormant.
Cultivation
No pruning required. The foliage will die down to ground level at the end of the season. The bulb requires protection from harsh cold, this can be helped by ensuring the tuberous root is planted 10-15cm deep in the soil. A mulch of composted leaf mould will help to insulate the soil and will feed the soil for next year.
