Germination

Sow into a cold frame in autumn. Prior to sowing hard-coated seeds may be soaked in water for 24 hours. Drain. Sow thinly into 15cm pots of moist, well-drained bonsai soil with added gravel and potting compost. Water well. Place in a cold frame. Autumn warmth, followed by natural winter cold should offer ideal conditions for germination to occur in spring as the weather warms. Some seeds may require 2 full winters before germination occurs. Do not discard the seed tray prematurely. Leave seedlings undisturbed for 1 year, then transplant to larger individual pots. Allow to grow for at least 3 years before bonsai training.

Growing

These trees and shrubs may be trained as bonsai specimens or may be grown to their full natural height. Do not begin bonsai training until at least 3 years after germination. There is no such thing as an indoor tree, therefore consider the placement of your bonsai carefully, light temperature and humidity are key. Bonsai need plenty of light, place near a window but not in full sun. A cooler room is better than a warm one, avoid placing near a radiator. Bonsai prefer a little humidity, a kitchen or bathroom are ideal locations, if placed elsewhere place the pot in a drip tray which should always contain a little water or offer a mist spray. Water when the top of the soil feels dry to the touch. Carefully water from the top. A liquid bonsai feed may be offered if desired.

Cultivation

Pruning of bonsai is essential to maintain health and good shape. Long shoots can weaken fine branches. Trim new shoots with scissors back to within 1-2 sets of leaves. Prune to maintain gaps between branches. Repot as required, every 2-3 years depending on growth.
