Germination

Sow directly in spring after danger of frost has passed. Can be sown indoors before last expected frost. Surface sow onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Just cover seed with a sprinkling of soil. Ideal temp. 15-22°C. Germination of most varieties takes 1-4 weeks, although it may be 6-8 weeks before the seedlings emerge. Indoor sowings should be acclimatised and planted out after danger of frost has passed.

Growing

Easily container grown. Requires regular watering and will benefit from a slow release or liquid fertiliser for maximum flowering. Can be grown directly in the border also.

Cultivation

Deadhead regularly to prolong the flowering window. Many varieties enclosed will self-seed freely. Seed may be harvested at the end of the growing season. These plants will be cut down by frost.
