Germination

Can be sown year round for indoor cultivation. For outdoor cultivation sow Feb-Jun. Sow seed on the surface of free draining seed compost. Cover with a light sprinkling of vermiculite or compost. Propagate 15-25°C. Germination takes 14-21 days. Compost should be very lightly watered as prone to powdery mildew if too moist. When large enough to handle transplant to 8cm pots and grow on in cooler conditions. Acclimatise and plant out after danger of frost has passed.

Growing

Easy to grow. Prefers a well-drained sandy soil and sunny position. Water moderately at root level, avoid splashing leaves.

Cultivation

Harvest basil leaves regularly when required to promote new growth. Pinch out any flowers as soon as they appear to prolong the harvest period.
