Germination
Can be sown year round for indoor cultivation. Indoors, sow 5mm deep into free draining seed compost in a pot. Ideal temp. 15-25°C. Grow on a windowsill, indoor raised seedlings can be acclimatised and planted out after danger of frost has passed. For outdoor cultivation sow Apr-May. Sow 5mm deep into small trays. Germination takes 14-21 days, in cooler weather germination can take longer. Compost should be very lightly watered as prone to powdery mildew if too moist. Prick out seedlings when large enough to handle into 3cm pots. Grow on. Transplant to final position with 30cm spacing or move into larger pots. May be sown directly Apr-May.
Growing
Easy to grow. Prefers a well-drained sandy soil and sunny position. Water moderately at root level, avoid splashing leaves.
Cultivation
Harvest basil leaves regularly when required to promote new growth. Pinch out any flowers as soon as they appear to prolong the harvest period.
