Germination

Sow in a cold frame in autumn or sow indoors in winter. Prior to sowing nick or scarify seed. Under glass, sow into moist, well-drained seed compost. Allow natural winter cold to offer ideal conditions for germination to occur in spring as the weather warms. Indoors, sow seed, place seed tray in a polythene bag and place in the fridge, 4°C for 1-3 months. If germination begins remove seedlings, if not wait for the 3 months then remove to warmth, 15°C, for germination. Germination takes 1-6 months. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle. Grow on under glass for their first winter. Acclimatise and plant out when danger of frost has passed.

Growing

Prefers most well-drained soils in full or partial sun. It prefers a moist soil. Often found in light woodland or along water margins. The dormant plant is hardy to -20°C but young growth can be damaged by late frosts so offer winter protection.

Cultivation

Propagate via cuttings of half-ripe wood in summer or by layering in spring. Prune in early spring as the buds begin to swell. Cut back all stems to a low, permanent framework, approx. 4 buds from the base of the plant. Mulch well after pruning.
