Germination
Sow indoors Mar-Apr. Sow direct May-Jun. Indoors sow into small pots containing moist well-drained seed compost. Transplant seedling as soon as possible to final growing position. Best sown directly as soon as the ground warms. Sow 12mm deep into prepared soil with 30cm spacing. Keep moist until germination occurs. Germination takes 8-12 days but can be erratic and over a much longer period of time. Germination may not occur until after a period of winter cold. Thin to final spacing of 30cm. Keep weed free.
Growing
Prefers any light, well-drained soil in full sun. Water when the soil is dry.
Cultivation
Harvest the seeds when they have ripened but before the fall from the plant. Cut flower heads and gently shake over a bowl. Cut leaves as required. The root should be eaten towards the end of the first year.
