Germination
Sow under glass. Surface sow onto moist well-drained seed compost in individual deep pots. Press seeds into the soil lightly. Just cover with grit or coarse sand. The pots can be placed inside a polythene bag to help maintain moisture levels. Germination will depend on the temperature outside but can be as little as 2 weeks at 20°C. Keep the soil moist. Autumn planted seeds should emerge the following spring. Remove the polythene bag as soon as germination occurs. Transplant seedlings when they have 2 sets of true leaves. Plant out after 1 year.
Growing
Prefers a rich, well-drained soil with plenty of well rotted manure or compost. Prefers a woodland setting. The leaves may be damaged by late frosts. Feed and water until well established. This tree tends to form several main stems, however it may be trained to have a central leader if desired.
Cultivation
Lightly prune, if desired, in late winter or early spring. After pruning mulch and feed.
