Germination
Sow indoors immediately. Sow into moist, well-drained seed compost. Push the seed up to half its depth into the soil, the top of the seed should not be covered. Keep moist but not wet. Place somewhere dark or cover seed tray. Prone to damping off so we recommend the use of a fungicide to prevent this. Ideal temp. 16-20°C. Germination takes from 6 weeks approx. Transplant seedlings to individual pots and grow on under glass. Treat as a house plant.
Growing
Grow under glass in a loam-based potting compost with added leaf mould and grit. Prefers bright filtered light, with protection from hot sun. Water freely in summer, keep barely moist in winter. Fertilise weekly when in growth, until the flower bud forms. This plant resents root disturbance and prefers a restricted root run to encourage flowering.
Cultivation
Propagate by seed or by removing suckers. If sowing fresh seed from your plants remove pulp prior to sowing. Allow the plant to rest in autumn be reducing water for 12-14 weeks and keeping plant slightly cooler 10-17°C. If the plant starts to wilt at this point add a little water only. cut flower stalks off at the base after flowering unless you wish to collect seed. Remove any withered or brown leaves.
