Germination
Sow under glass. Best sown in a cold frame Nov-Mar. Surface sow onto moist well-drained seed compost. Cover with a fine layer of soil. Ideal temp. less than +5°C. Germination is known to be irregular and over a long period. Constant moisture needs to be maintained. Do not discard the seed tray prematurely. Germination should occur as the weather warms in spring. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to deep pots to allow the tap root to develop. Acclimatise and plant out after danger of frost has passed with 100cm spacing.
Growing
Prefers fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Water regularly during the growing season. Protect with a dry mulch in winter.
Cultivation
May die after seeding as it is monocarpic but will have self-seeded freely prior to this.
