Germination

Sow under glass in spring or autumn. Prior to sowing soak seed for 48 hours in warm water. Sow into moist, well-drained seed compost. Ideal temp. 20⁰C. Germination is likely to be slow are irregular, taking several months. Transplant seedlings when large enough to handle to individual pots and grow on under glass for their first winter. Acclimatise and plant out the following spring/summer when danger of frost has passed.

Growing

Prefers a deep, fertile, consistently moist sandy soil which is slightly alkaline. Does not like a clay soil. Young plants will require protection from slugs for the first few years. If you are growing for root production prevent the plant from flowering.

Cultivation

Roots should be harvested in autumn and dried. Roots are brown on the outside and yellow inside. The smell is of Anise and the flavour is sweet. Cut into 8cm pieces. Propagate by division of the root in spring or autumn.
