Germination

Sow immediately. If seeds are covered in a slimy pulp soak for 3-4 days prior to sowing, changing the water several times a day. Sow indoors or under glass. Sow 5mm deep into a deep pot or deep seed plug trays filled with moist well-drained acidic seed compost with added grit. If the sowing pot is deep the plant can remain in it undisturbed for a year or so. The pot can be cover with a polythene bag to prevent the surface from drying. Our seed is fresh from cold storage and does not usually require a further cold treatment. Seed should germinate at room temp. Germination can be irregular and takes from 3 weeks but may take up to 6 months. If germination still has not occurred cold stratify at 4°C for 2-4 weeks then return to warmth. Ensure soil remains moist throughout this period. After germination 2-3 leaves are set and then growing seems to stop for many months, this is normal. When the plant has 2-3 stems and thread like roots transplant to 8cm pots. Very slow to grow. Pot on as needed.

Growing

The plant will start to climb at 2-3 years. This will require a frame on which to climb. Dislikes lime soils. Use an ericaceous compost mixed with perlite. The compost needs to be acidic and free-draining, but moisture retentive. Avoid root disturbance at all times, both for seedlings and plant of all sizes. If re-potting do not 'firm-in' the plant as this may bruise or break the roots, instead settle plant in by watering slowly allowing the soil to move gently around the roots. Avoid full sun and excessive heat as this can scorch the plant. If grown in a greenhouse the plants must be shaded from direct sun from the end of February until the end of October. Keep the growing pot shaded, to keep the roots cool and spray the leaves in hot weather. Outdoor plants can be grown up a shady trellis or on a wall which is shaded by a deciduous tree in summer. Keep well watered but not waterlogged, never allow to stand in water. New leaves emerge from the crown at ground level therefore can be prone to slug and snail attack, treat as desired. Easy to care for.

Cultivation

Cold weather can cut this plant to the ground but it should regrow in spring. Does not require pruning. Fruits are rarely formed in the UK.
