Germination
Seed requires a period of cold to germinate. Sow directly or into a cold frame in autumn or sow indoors at any time. Indoors mix seed with moist vermiculite or perlite and place in a freezer bag. Cold stratify. Place the bag in the fridge, ideal temp. 0-4°C for 4-6 weeks, remove to 5-12°C for germination, sow mixture onto moist, well-drained seed compost. Germination takes a few weeks but can be erratic. Grow on seedlings. Only plant out after danger of frost has passed. If sowing into a cold frame simply surface sow onto compost, just cover with a sprinkling of soil and allow natural winter cold to offer ideal conditions for germination to occur as the weather warms in spring.
Growing
Prefers any moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full or partial shade. Protect from excessive winter wet.
Cultivation
Remove dead foliage and spent flower stems in spring. Propagate by seed or by division in autumn.
